Spokane Weekend on a Budget

I'm always surprised by the city of Spokane. It doesn't look like a big place, but its metro area population of over 600,000 ensures that there are plenty of new things to discover. My family lives in a small town about 30 miles outside of Spokane, so when we venture into "the big city" it's usually for a day of fun and exploration. And we always seem to find something new when we're there.

You can't ask for a better location, right on the river, near the convention center in downtown Spokane. It's cheaper than the nearby Marriott and Doubletree. The location puts you within walking distance of Riverfront Park, Gonzaga University, and all of the downtown shopping. Clean rooms, great breakfast, friendly staff!
The atmosphere is grungy, and the location isn't ideal, but if you want the best greasy burger and fries around, Dick's is the place to go. Try the Double Whammy for a burger that can feed you for an entire weekend. Get it to go, though, as you don't want to hang around Dick's for too long.
The gardens include Nishinomiya Japanese Garden and Rose Hill, home to over 1500 rose bushes.
There's nothing better, or cheaper, than a long walk down a beautiful nature trail. The Centennial Trail runs 37 miles along the Spokane River, and is open to hiking, biking, roller-blading, and running. Basically, any non-motorized activity. Follow it all the way out to Nine Mile Dam for some amazing scenery.
Manito Park's botanical gardens are a great place to spend an afternoon. The gardens include Nishinomiya Japanese Garden and Rose Hill, home to over 1500 rose bushes. There's a cute little cafe serving drinks and snacks.

You'll definitely want to ride the gondola over the Spokane Falls for a breathtaking view. There's also the historic 1909 Looff Carrousel, where you can make a grab for the golden ring. You'll also find miles of walking trails, a gigantic red wagon, an IMAX theater, sculptures, gardens, fountains, and more.

Burgers, fries, and shake. It's an All-American meal served up in a bottle-shaped building. A fun place to eat, at great prices that won't set you back. They make their own ice cream, so be sure to save room for dessert. More
