Oak Harbor Splurge!

Oak Harbor sits on the northern end of Whidbey Island, one of Washington State's most scenic spots. It's home to Whidbey Island Naval Air Station and as a result holds the greatest concentration of services on the island. Most visitors to Whidbey look elsewhere on the island to satisfy their splurge urges, but Oak Harbor holds some hidden gems that, unless you know where to look, will remain hidden. One of the best chefs in the Northwest operates his restaurant in Oak Harbor. In the woods just out of town, a world-class equestrian B&B is a horse-lover's dream. The stunningly scenic Deception Pass is a short drive - or boat ride - away. Oak Harbor is also a great base from which to explore the rest of the island.

The urge to splurge isn't always about separating yourself from your cash. Sometimes it's about indulging in simple quality. That's why people go to Seabolts. Here you can pick up a variety of smoked salmon products for your picnic or as a gift to take home, or better yet, order from their generous menu in the deli. Legend has it that Seabolts' fish & chips is the best folks who've tried it have ever eaten. I can attest that it's true.

There's talent in Oak Harbor, and you're likely to find it if you take in a performance at The Whidbey Playhouse. Buying a couple of tickets to a show at this non-profit community theater is a great way not only to support the local arts but also get in a few hours of quality entertainment. Check their website for what's playing - you might even plan your trip around it. More
