Maryam Montague

Once upon a time, I packed up my family and left everything I knew to move to a real kingdom far, far away. The kingdom of Morocco. There I bought a Marrakech olive grove and with my architect husband set out to build a home and boutique hotel, Peacock Pavilions (www.peacockpavilions.com). Oh, it’s been years in the making. Will it ever be done? Maybe. In the mean time, I haven’t been idle. My day job is as a human rights and democracy specialist -- a job I’m passionate about and which makes my parents proud. This past year, I have traveled to Egypt, Mali, India, Rwanda and Yemen on assignment. I’m a writer and photographer, too. My first book -- part memoir, part Moroccan design treatise -- will be published by Artisan Books in 2010. As a freelance writer/photographer, I conjure up articles for magazines about all things Morocco, and I’ve updated several guidebooks on Marrakech. Interior design is my obsession, and I sell beautiful Moroccan carpets and textiles to stores and individuals. When I am not working, I love spending time with friends in our rug-filled Berber tent, and chasing after my two rascally children and extra-rascally husband.
