Africa: and a tale of the African Leadership Academy and the Anzisha Prize
My father is one of those tremendously cautious people who is terribly adventurous. The thought of starting his own business makes him sweat and itch. But if working for someone else, he doesn't hesitate to manage large teams doing nearly impossible tasks (like disaster relief in far off places). In the same vein, the possibility of not getting a steady pay check month after month (one that doesn't go up or down) is truly a terrifying prospect for my father. However, heading off to Sudan with just a carry on bag and a good hat, seems perfectly normal (and really, quite a good idea) as far as he is concerned.
As a young adult, I never dreamt of having my own start-up, inventing my own software, or really ever just working for myself. I worked for others -- that's just the way it was.
And then as I got older, things began to change. I still worked for others but I also worked for myself. And as soon as I freed myself to do the latter, I found my brain working in new and creative ways. Buying land in Morocco, starting my own non-profit association, and designing my own products -- seemed, well, feasible, and really, quite a good idea. To this day, I continue to contemplate somewhat risky business propositions regularly, much to the dismay of my risk averse husband.
But the fact is that I wish I had started earlier.
So it makes sense, really, that I've gotten on a plane
After spending time in South Africa, I'll head off to Ethiopia. In October, I'll go to Nigeria. And then in November I'll be in Uganda before heading back to South Africa. I'll be in Marrakech in between these trips, of course.
If you're interested, I'd love it you followed some of my tweets on @AnzishaPrize. And take a peek at the Anzisha Prize's Facebook page here and the African Leadership Academy's Facebook page here. Such worthy causes! But otherwise, I'll continue to be here on this little blog. I hope you'll continue to come visit:-)
