Try The Comfort Inn near the Santa Monica Pier. It's nothing special, but considering the location the price is pretty reasonable. It's less than two miles from the pier, and walking distance to tons of shops and restaurants.
A great deal is the Ambrose Hotel. Rates teeter around $200/night, but it has lovely decor, lots of amenities, and one of my friends said it was one of best hotels she has ever stayed at. She also said the service was impeccable.
How about the Sea Shore Motel? From the outside, it looks kinda chintzy, but the rooms are comfortable, the staff is helpful, and the location and price are definitely right.
