San Antonio, Texas Weekend With Kids

The first thing that comes to mind for somebody planning a visit to San Antonio is probably the Alamo, of course, since it is the number one tourist destination in the state of Texas. However, there are plenty of other things to do in this city. San Antonio is also a center for Tejano, Native American, and Southwestern cultures and I found numerous festivals and exhibits related to all of these. The weather has always been comfortable when I have visited, but I prefer the cooler temperatures of the fall. I understand it can get below freezing sometimes during the winter, but not often. Besides remembering the Alamo, the kids will also love checking out SeaWorld San Antonio and the Natural Bridge Caverns.

SeaWorld is always a great choice for a family activity because there is something to be enjoyed by people of every age group. My wife and I enjoyed the laid back walk through the animal exhibits. The kids had a blast on all the rides there, especially the Steel Eel roller coaster and the Lost Lagoon Waterpark. But, we all loved watching the Azul Show, which combined performances by dolphins, birds, whales and people. I recommend getting there as early as possible to try and avoid longer lines for rides. As the day went on, the park got more crowded. I also suggest checking on the SeaWorld website for discount tickets.
Natural Bridge Caverns is a really cool place. You and your kids alike will be fascinated by all there is to see and do here. Natural Bridge Caverns is a really cool place. You and your kids alike will be fascinated by all there is to see and do here. It is a little ways away from downtown San Antonio, about a 45 minute drive, but well worth the trip. Discovered in 1960 by four students who were spelunking, these caverns feature many underground formations including emerald pools, delicate crystals, and one underground room that is bigger than a football field. There is a lot of fun to be had above ground, too. The Watchtower Challenge here is one of the tallest climbing towers and zip lines in Texas. There are also opportunities to discover rocks, minerals and rough cut gems. I suggest checking in advance if you want to do the Watchtower, as it is only opened during the summer season.
Once inside the gardens, however, you feel far away from urban life, surrounded by beautiful grounds, trees and flowers.

The Guenther House is the best place to take your kids to eat in downtown San Antonio. They only serve breakfast and lunch, so dont plan on eating your evening meal here. The food is fresh and delicious, my favorites being the buttermilk biscuits with country sausage gravy and the jalapeno jelly. The prices are very affordable, which is a bonus with the kids coming along. Besides the delicious food, great service and prices, the Guenther House has an adjoining store and museum that the family can enjoy after the meal. It is the original home of an old pioneer family, restored to the condition it was in during the early 1900s, and the store features gourmet baking goods and accessories.
I recommend a visit to the Alamo in San Antonio to anyone who loves the United States of America. I recommend a visit to the Alamo in San Antonio to anyone who loves the United States of America. It is restored to its original state and you cant help but look in awe at the old mission, thinking about the great battle that took place here. Some of the most significant names in the history of the American West were there, fighting for Texas independence from the Mexican government. I recommend that you allow yourself plenty of time to spend here when you go. I found myself fascinated for almost four hours with everything there is to see and learn here. Plus, it is easily accessible from the River Walk.

The Japanese Tea Gardens in San Antonio, also called the Sunken Gardens, is a great place for a walk among the natural beauty of Texas. Its like a little getaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown because it is right in the heart of the city. Once inside the gardens, however, you feel far away from urban life, surrounded by beautiful grounds, trees and flowers. I recommend checking out the Sunken Garden Theater while you are there. It is a stage for many free activities, including plays, comedians, and concerts. Make sure to check with the theater in advance what is appearing on the stage so you can plan your visit accordingly.
They only serve breakfast and lunch, so dont plan on eating your evening meal here.
