One Day in San Antonio, Texas

The first thing that comes to mind for somebody planning a visit to San Antonio is probably the Alamo, of course, since it is the number one tourist destination in the state of Texas. However, there are plenty of other things to do in this city. San Antonio is also a center for Tejano, Native American, and Southwestern cultures and I found numerous festivals and exhibits related to all of these. The weather has always been comfortable when I have visited, but I prefer the cooler temperatures of the fall. I understand it can get below freezing sometimes during the winter, but not often. Besides remembering the Alamo, I highly recommend checking out the River Walk downtown and the many other activities close to it.

The River Walk in San Antonio is one thing you definitely must see during your visit. I love that you can choose how much time and energy you want to spend. It is quite an easy and enjoyable walk through the downtown area, which is only about one mile. You can easily spend a whole day there if you take time to stop at several shops, exhibits and restaurants. The walkway itself stretches for much longer than this, however, so you can walk many miles if you feel like it. If walking isnt your thing, I recommend taking one of the many boat tours on the San Antonio River. You can spend anywhere from 30 minutes to over an hour seeing the sights with a narrated tour. It is a lot of fun.

I recommend a visit to the Alamo in San Antonio to anyone who loves the United States of America. It is restored to its original state and you cant help but look in awe at the old mission, thinking about the great battle that took place here. Some of the most significant names in the history of the American West were there, fighting for Texas independence from the Mexican government. I recommend that you allow yourself plenty of time to spend here when you go. I found myself fascinated for almost four hours with everything there is to see and learn here. Plus, it is easily accessible from the River Walk.
The food is not necessarily anything spectacular, as far as Mexican restaurants go.

The Japanese Tea Gardens in San Antonio, also called the Sunken Gardens, is a great place for a walk among the natural beauty of Texas. Its like a little getaway from the hustle and bustle of downtown because it is right in the heart of the city. Once inside the gardens, however, you feel far away from urban life, surrounded by beautiful grounds, trees and flowers. I recommend checking out the Sunken Garden Theater while you are there. It is a stage for many free activities, including plays, comedians, and concerts. Make sure to check with the theater in advance what is appearing on the stage so you can plan your visit accordingly.
The Majestic Theater is San Antonios oldest theater. It is a registered National Historic Landmark. The theater is beautiful, both inside and out, and is still a great place to catch a musical play or a concert. The theater is beautiful, both inside and out, and is still a great place to catch a musical play or a concert. The majestic seats over 2,300 people, and until recently was still the largest theater in Texas and one of the largest movie theaters in the United States. I recommend catching a performance by the San Antonio Symphony while you are there. The Majestic has been the symphonys home since 1989 and they have several performances throughout the season. If the symphony isnt your thing, I recommend checking with the theater in advance to find out their performance schedule. I understand you can enjoy a wide variety of performers here, from classical to country and stand-up comedy.

Casa Rio is my favorite place to eat on the River Walk in San Antonio. The food is not necessarily anything spectacular, as far as Mexican restaurants go. But what I love about this place is the location and fantastic service. They offer both indoor and outdoor seating, and I really enjoy sitting outside on the river and watching people walk by while I eat. It is usually crowded when I have gone, but I have never waited longer than 15 minutes, even when I thought I would have to wait at least 30. The servers have always been very happy and helpful, and the food comes out really fast. The location on the River Walk makes it a very convenient and short walk from many of the hotels downtown.
