One Day in Plano, Texas

I thought that it might be a good idea to combine a stay in Plano with a visit to Dallas. I was able to find a hotel rate that was a little bit cheaper than hotels in downtown Dallas, and the one hour-long train ride made it easy, albeit time consuming, to get to downtown if I wanted to. After a little research, however, I found a bunch of activities in Plano, enough to keep me happy just exploring that city. There are several nature preserves and parks in town with great walking trails. I love to spend time outdoors, so this was very appealing to me. So, I recommend Plano as a place to stay in close proximity to Dallas, as well as a lovely place to visit in itself.

This interesting little museum is housed in a building that used to be one of the primary stations on the route of the Texas Electric Railway that used to run between Denison and Dallas. The museum tells the history and importance of this rail line through a lot of really cool pictures and antiques. One of the original rail cars has been beautifully restored and is proudly displayed in front of the building. The current train stop in downtown Plano is only about a block and a half away from the museum, which seems like an appropriate way to arrive. The best part about the museum is that admission is free. However, operating hours are limited, so call ahead or check their website to make sure you dont miss out.

The group I visited with sat for appetizers and cocktails for a few minutes. We ordered dinner right before we walked into the theater, and our entrees were served to us in there. We continued to enjoy food and beverages through the entire film. Overall, I thought the Angelika Film Center was very nice; more than a movie theater, it is a gourmet restaurant with gourmet cinema, too. I definitely recommend it.
The food at the Fillmore Pub is definitely delicious, but the real attraction is the extensive beer and whiskey menus.

The Cockroach Hall of Fame Museum is a very odd and hilarious attraction. I highly recommend a visit here for a good laugh and for some serious pest control research. The museum is full of dead cockroaches that are wearing costumes and posed in various settings. Some are modeled after famous people, like Liberoache, a cockroach playing a grand piano. The museum is located inside the headquarters of an actual pest control company. The proprietor literally puts his work on display. After killing the bugs, he suits them up and poses them for our enjoyment. If you are bothered by cockroaches, this may not be the place for you. But, if you are into quirky and unusual displays, you will most likely enjoy a visit here.

This Best Western Hotel was a particularly good value for me. Most of the things I wanted to do when I first planned to stay in Plano happened to be in downtown Dallas. But, it was easier to find cheap rates in Plano than in Dallas. Luckily, the train stop was a short walk from the Best Western. There it was easy to catch a train to Dallas. Plus, the rooms were extra comfortable, stocked with plenty of pillows and towels. I would definitely stay here again.

The food at the Fillmore Pub is definitely delicious, but the real attraction is the extensive beer and whiskey menus. The Fillmore offers your typical pub fare to eat, featuring appetizers, soups and burgers; although I was impressed with the cheese board appetizer we ordered, which had goat cheese and salami on it. It was a perfect compliment to the IPA beer that I started with. For dinner, I switched to a little sweeter Belgian red ale to go with the Reuben sandwich I ordered and I was pleased with both of these, as well. Add a Jameson on the rocks for an aperitif, and I had practically had the best meal of my life. I highly recommend the Fillmore Pub for beer and whiskey snobs like me.
