Downtown Mckinney
McKinney, Texas is not just a concrete suburb of Dallas (which is what many people just driving through on the highway might assume). It is a laid back and family friendly spot with plenty to explore. The historic center is picturesque with a small town feel but still manages to pull in big city touches with its fine dining, quality arts and high end shops.
No questions about it, this is the place to stay in McKinney. The Grand is a small, boutique hotel that's in a historic building on the town square. The decor is exquisite but not too pricey and it has a distinctly Texan atmosphere.
The Heard Science Center is both an educational science museum and a wildlife sanctuary. It also has miles of self-guided tours through oak forests. The Heard Science Center is both an educational science museum and a wildlife sanctuary. It also has miles of self-guided tours through oak forests. Some of the largest trees I have seen in Texas were at this center (the Burr Oak). On one guided path there are (almost) life-sized automated dinosaurs lurking right off- trail to thrill and delight the little ones (and adults too). This is a fun place to spend a sunny afternoon.
Arabella's is a great little boutique shop catering to women. I have gotten a few cute items from this store. There are also lots of other great antique, clothing and trinket shops lining McKinney's charming town square and you can spend a pleasant afternoon strolling in and out of them.
