One Day in Killeen, Texas

Killeen is not really the kind of city that might attract tourists. There aren't any famous monuments or buildings. The most interesting attraction is Fort Hood, the largest military installation in the United States; and Killeen is not right on Interstate Highway 35, it is about 20 miles off that road. But, if you find yourself spending a day in Killeen you can certainly find some fun things to do and some decent food. If you like the outdoors, I urge you to check out the nearby lakes, Belton Lake and Stillhouse Hollow Lake. Both are just a short drive from Killeen. They are popular spots for picnicking, fishing and camping.

Located about fifteen miles east of Killeen, Stillhouse Hollow Lake is often called one of the best kept secrets in Texas. It is a haven for sport fishermen who like to catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, crappie, and white bass. There are ample campsites for tents and RVs, some with water and e... More >

It is a haven for sport fishermen who like to catch largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, crappie, and white bass. There are ample campsites for tents and RVs, some with water and electric hookups. Be advised that there is a launch fee of three dollars at most of the boat ramps, and parks charge a day use fee and additional fees for camping.
Boulders Sport Climbing Center is a fun place to spend the afternoon. It is an indoor rock climbing center with walls that are forty feet tall and a free standing boulder. The staff has routes up the walls all mapped out to match your difficulty level, so even beginners can be confident about climbing. There is a very positive, encour... More >

Henderson's Family Restaurant has a reputation in Killeen for the best breakfast in town, and I tend to agree.

The staff certainly exemplifies the family restaurant attitude, too. They were friendly and fast. I definitely recommend having breakfast here when visiting Killeen.
I don't eat Thai food very often, but I really liked the food at Tham Rab Thai Restaurant in Killeen. I must say I was a little surprised to see a Thai place in this town. I loved Little Italy Restaurant in Killeen. It made me feel like I was eating in a real Italian home. The atmosphere was very laid back. It got busy while we were there, and it seemed like we may have waited a little too long for our food. But, I think it was worth the wait. It is definitely a better option than one of the many chain restaurants in this town. Overall, it was a nice, relaxing experience and the food was delightful. I recommend it to anyone visiting Killeen.

The Shilo is probably the nicest hotel in Killeen. Unfortunately, it is probably the most expensive, as well. In my opinion, it is worth the little extra money to stay at a place like this in a small town like Killeen. There are a lot of activities contained within the hotel itself. They have a nice fitness area that they keep clean and sanitary. I really liked the Cigar lounge, not because I smoke cigars, but because ... More

I was very pleased with my stay here and would definitely return.
