One Day in Katy, Texas

Katy, Texas is a suburb of Houston. It gets its name from the railroad that runs right through town, originally known as the Kansas-Texas Rail Line, or the K.T. for short. With a population of only about 11,000, Katy is not a big city by any means. However, there are still some fun attractions here and definitely some great opportunities for shopping and dining. When you visit, I recommend starting with one of the museums or parks, then rounding out the afternoon or evening with dinner at one of Katys great restaurants.

The Katy Heritage Museum is located on George Bush Dr., inside the VFW Park. The hours of operation seemed sporadic, so I suggest calling ahead or checking their website to make sure they will be open on the day you are planning your visit. The museum features displays of vintage farming equipment and artifacts from Katys agricultural and pioneering history, plus a ton of old photographs and fascinating antiques. At the museums official opening, they even used an old broad ax to cut through binder twine instead of the traditional ribbon cutting. I am always interested in the history of places that I visit, so this was pretty cool for me.

It was built by a businessman from Hong Kong who feared that his teenage children didnt know much about Chinese culture because they had lived in the United States their whole lives. I really enjoyed the miniature replicas of the Forbidden City and of Emperor Qin's six thousand-man terra-cotta army, and his tomb, Mount Li. This is quite an interesting museum, but it may be a bit over-priced at ten dollars for admission.

Our chefs were very interactive with us throughout the evening and added to our good time.

Antonias Italian Restaurant is definitely the best Italian food in Katy, Texas. Perhaps even the best in Texas. I have tried many Italian places and I know the good from the mediocre. I was very pleased with the food at Antonias, as well as the prompt, friendly service. All the staples of an Italian menu are present, like fettuccine alfredo, chicken parmesan, and spaghetti with meatballs. But, for a real treat, I recommend trying one of the original dishes. I had the Melanzane Florentine and it was delicious. I definitely will go out of my way to return here.

The Candlewood Suites in Katy is very conveniently located off I-10 just across from the baseball and softball training facility and just 30 minutes from downtown Houston. I would say that the staff went way above my expectations. The girl at the front desk called my room about ten minutes after I had checked in, just to make sure everything was to my satisfaction. It seems like a little thing, but it is a little thing that has never happened to me at any other hotel, so it made an impression. I also thought it was pretty cool that they had a twenty-four-hour convenience store onsite. You never know when you need some toothpaste when you travel.
