One Day in Houston, Texas

I have been fascinated with space exploration since I was a kid, so Houston is a terrific place to visit for a fan like me. Mission Control at the NASA Space Center is one of the most popular attractions in the city. It is easy to make your way around the city on the public train system, which is always a plus for me. I like to avoid driving in a big city, especially if I feel that I'm not familiar with the streets. I feel more relaxed and have more fun that way. I recommend staying right downtown and using the train as much as possible during your visit.

The NASA Space Center may be the best known attraction in Houston, and with good reason. I wanted to experience the history of the facility and was not disappointed. In fact, I wish that I had allowed more time for my visit and reserved a spot in the Level 9 tour. It is a little pricey, and they don't allow kids under 14, but you ge... More >

In fact, I wish that I had allowed more time for my visit and reserved a spot in the Level 9 tour. It is a little pricey, and they don't allow kids under 14, but you get to see so much more of the center. This is more exciting for a big NASA fan. There is also a pretty cool section called Kids Space, a collection of hands-on exhibits and games aimed at teaching kids about space and space exploration.

A visit here probably has more historic and educational value than entertainment, but kids don't seem to get bored. After spending more than three hours here, you can easily feel like you want to see more. I recommend checking to see when they are showing the 4D movie so you can plan your visit for that time. It is definitely worth checking out.

There is no better way to spend a summer evening than at a baseball game, and Minute Maid Park offers all the excitement there is to offer in professional baseball. It is a lovely stadium with home team fans that really get into it. I recommend splurging for the lower level seats, if you can afford it. The better view of the field is definitely worth it. Also, make sure you pack enough cash to afford the high food and drink prices, if you intend to eat and/or drink anything. I don't know if they do fireworks after every game, but if you happen to see them it is even more fun.

The Magnolia Hotel is very conveniently located in downtown Houston. It is a really nice hotel and I expected it to be very expensive. But, you can find good discounts if you search online. The comfort of the rooms and the quality of the service made me feel like it was more expensive, though. The hotel even offered their car to drive us and pick us up wherever we were going. Most of the time I prefer to take the train, however, and train stations are only a short walk away.
If you are into things that are offbeat and unusual, then you must see the Beer Can House in Houston. The name Beer Can House will make most people think of a trashy thing constructed by a drunk person. I admit, that was my first thought when I heard it, too. But after seeing it, don't be surprised if you find yourself appreciating this eclectic piece of art. As the story goes, a couple who loves to drink beer on their porch decided to turn their empties into a craft. It is a pretty darn good value, too, at only $2.00 per person for admission.
A visit here probably has more historic and educational value than entertainment, but kids don't seem to get bored.
