One Day in Garland, Texas

Garland, Texas is an inner suburb of Dallas located on the northeast side of the city. It is one of the more populated suburbs in the Dallas/Fort Worth metroplex. There are several top-rated hotels and restaurants in Garland, but not many tourist attractions. The Dallas light rail system has stops in Garland which make it easy to get to downtown Dallas and the rest of the city. It would make sense to stay in a hotel here because rates tend to be cheaper than downtown Dallas and it is very convenient to get around the rest of the metro area.

The hotel is definitely upscale with many luxuries like a poolside bar, internet caf and library. It was great to take a stroll along the boardwalk at sunset or listen to a concert at the outdoor amphitheatre on the waterfront. From the boardwalk you can also take a fishing excursion or rent a boat or jet-ski for the day. This is a lovely place to stay. Be warned, however, that it is pricey.
Blue Canyon Restaurant is a great place to enjoy happy hour and dinner on the shores of Lake Ray Hubbard in Rockwall. The dcor was lovely and reminded me of a mountain lodge. We sat by a giant picture window and had a fantastic view of the sunset over the lake and the Dallas skyline. It was gorgeous. The menu includes an impressive array of seafood choices that I was thrilled with. We had the polenta crusted calamari for an appetizer and loved it. For entrees, one of us ordered the pretzel crusted rainbow trout and the other got the Texas catfish. They were both very yummy. I highly recommend this upscale restaurant.
I highly recommend a visit here for a good laugh and for some serious pest control research.
The State Fair of Texas is a huge event every year with tons of great food, rides, and concerts. The State Fair of Texas is a huge event every year with tons of great food, rides, and concerts. During the fair, the University of Texas Longhorns and the University of Oklahoma Sooners play their annual rivalry football game in the Cotton Bowl arena, which is located inside the Fair Park. While you are there, you must check out Big Tex (a huge metal statue of a cowboy) and the Ferris wheel (the tallest one in North America at 212 feet). I also recommend getting a corny dog and a turkey leg to eat. But even if you don't go during October, which is when the fair runs, there are still several museums and gardens to see that are open year round.
I think it is pretty impressive that this market is so big there is actually a district of downtown Dallas called the Farmers Market District. The warm climate of Texas allows it to be open all year, so it doesn't really matter what season it is when you visit, you can still enjoy your time at the market. The warm climate of Texas allows it to be open all year, so it doesn't really matter what season it is when you visit, you can still enjoy your time at the market. I really liked the huge selection of delicious, fresh food grown by local farmers. Inside one of the buildings, there was a food court filled with more offerings from local restaurants and food stores. Make sure you are hungry when you go, so you have plenty of room to try several different things. There are too many good choices.

The Cockroach Hall of Fame Museum is a very odd and hilarious attraction. I highly recommend a visit here for a good laugh and for some serious pest control research. The museum is full of dead cockroaches that are wearing costumes and posed in various settings. Some are modeled after famous people, like Liberoache, a cockroach playing a grand piano. The museum is located inside the headquarters of an actual pest control company. The proprietor literally puts his work on display. After killing the bugs, he suits them up and poses them for our enjoyment. If you are bothered by cockroaches, this may not be the place for you. But, if you are into quirky and unusual displays, you will most likely enjoy a visit here.
