One Day in Denton, Texas

Denton is a suburb about forty miles north of Dallas. Being the home of two universities gives it a cool college town vibe. Denton culture is known for its live music and arts festivals that showcase the local talent; and is also known as the "Redbud Capital of Texas". There are recreation opportunities at the nearby lakes and a ton of great restaurants and shops as well. I recommend that you check the calendar of events in Denton and plan your visit around one of the many family friendly festivals that happen every year.

The Denton Jazz and Arts Festival is held every year in April. It is three days worth of music, arts and food featuring local as well as visiting performers. Admission is free, so the value can't be beat. I saw a ton of beautiful displays by local artists as well as delicious food by local vendors. My favorite part was the live music. Make sure to bring a lawn chair or a blanket to sit on the grass. April is also the time when the redbud blossoms are in full bloom, and you can't help but notice their abundance and beauty.

The Denton County Courthouse on the Square Museum is a lovely and historic building in the center of Denton. It still houses some county offices but does not serve as the courthouse anymore. Admission is free, which I always find to be a great value, and the museum is full of interesting history of the city and county of Denton. It's also the final resting place for John B. Denton, the city's namesake. As a bonus, during the months of May and June there are free concerts on the courthouse square on Wednesday afternoons and Thursday evenings.

In 2001, the home was moved to the Historical Park of Denton County and converted into a museum that offers a glimpse of life in the days when it was a farmhouse. On a visit here you may enjoy exhibits and a number of lectures about local history. Right outside from the kitchen there is a beautiful Victorian garden that features antique roses, and succulent herbs and vegetables. It was definitely a fun experience.
A visit to Beth Marie's Old Fashioned Ice Cream & Soda Fountain is like taking a trip back in time to an original ice cream parlor. The first thing that I loved when I walked in was the dcor; checker-board floors, marble counter top, old style round tables, wire-backed chairs and a decorative metal ceiling. But once I tasted the ice cream, I practically forgot about all that as I lost myself in delicious flavor. We were a party of four. Two of us got ice cream on homemade waffle cones and two got sodas made from the antique soda fountain. Besides being so yummy, it was just a fun atmosphere.

The other thing I love is the prices. Most of the entrees are under ten dollars, making it very affordable. I got the three cheese enchiladas, which came with rice and beans of course, and they were delicious. Everybody in our party was pleased with their meal. Make sure to pick up a homemade praline at the register on your way out; the perfect finish to your meal.
