One Day in Conroe, Texas

Conroe is a suburb of Houston located about forty miles north of the city. It is on the edge of the Houston metro area and the gateway to an abundance of outdoor activities at nearby Lake Conroe, Huntsville State Park, and Sam Houston National Forest. Camping, hiking, fishing and boating are some of the fun things you can do outdoors when visiting. Downtown Conroe is a fun place with a ton of history and culture. You can enjoy shopping and golfing during the daylight hours. There are many art galleries, great restaurants, and live music venues to spend the nighttime hours.

I didn't really spend that much time at the hotel when I visited Conroe, but the perks were great. I took advantage of a little time in the outdoor pool. I found it relaxing that it was right next to the rock fountain. At the complimentary hot breakfast, I got my fill of cinnamon rolls and coffee every morning, which were delicious.... More >

I found it relaxing that it was right next to the rock fountain. At the complimentary hot breakfast, I got my fill of cinnamon rolls and coffee every morning, which were delicious. The rooms were great, too. They were very clean and the wireless internet was easy to connect to. This is definitely the place to stay in Conroe.
The Corner Pub in Conroe is the best place in town for live music. Besides featured performers every weekend, they also have an open mic night and a jam session every week. There is pretty much some kind of music going on here every night. There was not a huge crowd on the Friday night when I went, but they were definitely into the music. The atmosphere is a lot of fun, too. The dcor is kind of quirky and original and it gave me the feeling of being in the basement of a good friend.
But my wildlife encounters were limited to mostly deer, ducks, quail and squirrels.
Sam Houston National Forest is a beautiful wilderness just north of Houston about fifty miles. It is a haven for outdoor activities of all kinds. I spent almost all of my time here exploring the Lone Star Hiking Trail. It is 128 miles long and the longest wilderness hiking trail in Texas. The trail is divided into different sections on maps, so it's easy to do a little bit at a time. I was kind of hoping to have a Bigfoot sighting because I've heard there have been a lot of them in this area. But my wildlife encounters were limited to mostly deer, ducks, quail and squirrels. I recommend visiting either between September and October or February and March. These are the times of year with the least amount of rainfall and the most comfortable temperatures.

The Southern Empress Cruise was a ton of fun. The ship is a grand, old paddlewheel riverboat from the 1800's. They do cruise tours with meals on Lake Conroe. The Southern Empress Cruise was a ton of fun. The ship is a grand, old paddlewheel riverboat from the 1800's. They do cruise tours with meals on Lake Conroe. We went for the Sunday morning brunch cruise, but they also run weekdays for lunch and dinner. The brunch was fantastic. I tried some of the fresh jumbo shrimp and the prime rib, which were both delicious. My favorite was definitely the made-to-order omelet station. They also give you one complimentary glass of champagne, which is the perfect compliment to the meal. The cruise overall was a cool and fun way to see the sights of Lake Conroe on a beautiful, sunny day.
If you like Texas music at all, I highly recommend attending any of the performances sponsored by the Sounds of Texas.
