Austin - An Easy, Breezy, Family Weekend

With its fabulous outdoor spaces and super laid back atmosphere, Austin is a great place to travel with a family in tow. I created this playlist with the words "fun" and "easy" in mind - two things that I know are important for parents when planning a vacation for the whole family.

I usually loathe recommending a "chain" anything. However, the Doubletree on 15th street really is the perfect family hotel for Austin. It is located downtown but on the outside edge so that you can easily walk many places but it isn't too noisy. The rooms come in spacious one or two bedroom suites with a foldout bed in the living room and a full kitchen. This place gives you space, flexibility, value for money and convenience. This famous family-run restaurant is filled with numerous dining areas and outdoor spaces for a kid to "discover" and offers crayons and paper for the table if needed. The food is consistently good and tortillas are made on site. It is popular enough for there to be a wait at times, but, they often have balloon artists at the front to entertain the little ones. Their bar serves up good strong margaritas and be sure to order the "Bob Armstrong" dip!

Zoos always seem to be a hit with kids and the Austin Zoo is no exception. It is not as big or extensive as the zoos in Dallas or San Antonio, but, the manageable size makes it less crowded and easier to take in (translation: fewer tired meltdowns). There is a great petting zoo and the enclosures feel much more part of the natural setting rather than generic cages. It is definitely worth the short drive out of town.  More
