One Day in Amarillo, Texas

I must admit I was surprised by how much there is to actually do in Amarillo. I wasnt expecting much more than a little cowboy town with steakhouses and rodeos. But, Amarillo has activities related to many other cultures besides just cowboy. It is home to many museums, and professional theater, symphony and ballet companies. Its also located along the legendary Route 66, one of the most iconic roads in the United States with a reputation for Americana. A visit here during the summer can provide a bit of an escape from the typical Texas heat. High temperatures reach the 90s during the day, but at night it cools down very comfortably.

In reality, the Cadillac Ranch near Amarillo, Texas is just a quirky piece of pop art. Conceived as a tribute to the evolution of the tail fins, ten Cadillac sedans are half-buried, noses down and tail fins flying. But through the last forty years or so, it has become an American legend because of its hippie roots and its location on... More >

Conceived as a tribute to the evolution of the tail fins, ten Cadillac sedans are half-buried, noses down and tail fins flying. But through the last forty years or so, it has become an American legend because of its hippie roots and its location on Route 66. It was the legend that made me want to stop here. It was a little disappointing to see the cars mostly stripped down and covered with spray paint. I would love to have seen them before they deteriorated. But, it was still very cool. When you go, bring a can of spray paint and leave your mark.

It is full of interactive displays and video footage. I learned about horse anatomy and breeding, the lineage of some of the champion horses, and the techniques of training. It was a great learning experience for me, having no knowledge about quarter horses. I was fascinated by all the exhibits and history on display here. It was definitely worth the cheap admission of six dollars. I would recommend it to anyone.
Ohms Caf and Bar is probably one of the best experiences you could have in fine cuisine anywhere, let alone in Amarillo, Texas.

Located on the campus of Amarillo College, The Amarillo Museum of Art was an unexpected gem for me in this Texas city. The centerpiece is a lovely collection of Asian art that includes sculptures, paintings and other decorative arts. Many of the pieces have been donated by a local Dr. and his wife. They have been honored for their support by having the collection and gallery named after them; the Price Gallery of Asian Art. The best thing about the art museum is admission is free, so you cant go wrong. Spend as little or as much time as you like without feeling the need to get you moneys worth.

I definitely recommend staying at the Holiday Inn Express in Amarillo. It is everything you want in a hotel room; clean, comfortable, plenty of extras and privacy. Everything seems nicer when it is new, and this hotel is only a couple of years old. The staff was very polite, even when we kept bugging them for more towels. The rates were very affordable. It is very conveniently located; right off of Interstate 40 and within walking distance of several good places to eat. However, I suggest you go out of your way to try the excellent restaurant next door, Texas Roadhouse, for some traditional Texas fare.

Ohms Caf and Bar is probably one of the best experiences you could have in fine cuisine anywhere, let alone in Amarillo, Texas. Located in the heart of downtown, it puts the atmosphere of a downtown bistro into this typically cowboy city. It was quiet and relaxing. The menu is very eclectic, which is a welcome difference for Texas dining. I have tried the elk and the sea bass on two separate occasions, and loved them each. I was also impressed with the extensive wine list and the friendly bartenders. However, given the atmosphere and menu, Ohms Caf is probably not a place that the kids will enjoy.
