Murfreesboro has a pleasant mix of old and new for visitors to experience while they're on the town. For one, Murfreesboro is home to Middle Tennessee State University, and the school's 22,000 students give the city a youthful vibe. Just east of downtown is the campus with the requisite coffee shop and bookstore scene that normally accompanies a college town. Murfreesboro's stake in the past is important, as well. One of the top attractions is its Stones River National Battlefield, which aptly commemorates the second most deadly Civil War battle in Tennessee. The Visitor Center here is really a top-notch museum that is worth checking out for its haunting look into soldiers' lives and deaths. If a visit to Stones River makes your itinerary feel a little serious, then head over to another historical attraction in town, the delightful Cannonsburgh Village. Here you'll find Murfreesboro's pioneer past preserved in a number of cabins and school houses. Better yet, you'll get to see the World's Largest Red Cedar Bucket and the World' Largest Spinning Wheel, two odd attractions created by local craftsmen that are sure to bring a smile to your face.
