The pace in Franklin is slow while the history  … Read more > 17 miles south of Nashville is Franklin, a small, beautiful town that has historic roots dating back to the Civil War. Franklin has a mix of historic buildings, a well-preserved downtown area, and various antique shops that make for an ideal romantic getaway. The pace in Franklin is slow while the history is long - the 4-block downtown area, complete with restored homes and plenty of shopping - is on the National Register of Historic Places. Many of the colossal plantation homes in Franklin are well worth a look around. The Carnton Mansion is an especially good pick, with its stately architecture and private confederate cemetery outback. For shopping, head towards the Factory, a series of restored industrial buildings that have unique and hard-to-find retailers and interesting galleries. Likewise, you don't want to ignore Franklin's burgeoning antique's industry; the city has been touting itself as "the new antiques capital of Tennessee" and has quite a few good options to validate that claim. The best is probably the Franklin Antique Mall on 2nd Avenue, which has the largest and highest quality selection in town.
