One Day in Columbia

The capital of South Carolina has a lot to offer road trippers. There are great Southern restaurants, shopping and the bustling bar scene of Five Points, frequented by the students of the University of South Carolina. Every hour you hear that familiar gamecock crow over the loud speakers, followed by the USC fight song, and you know you can't be anywhere but Columbia. Walk the streets on the lookout for political heavy hitters and local celebrities.

This Five Points area billiards club is more than it appears from the outside. Although it is primarily a sports bar, it is also the best place in Columbia to learn how to shag. No, not that kind of shag. The state dance is similar to the Jitterbug and is associated with the beach music of Myrtle Beach. Don't worry if you're not a good dancer. Let a local take the lead.

You never know when a political scandal will break out, as was the case in the summer of 2009, so a stop by the State House is a must. Check out the monument to longtime legislator Strom Thurmond, who served from the 1950s to 2003. If you're lucky, you can stop by the gallery and see a fiery debate of bills.
Delicious Southern fare is the main menu feature, like fried chicken and shrimp and grits.

Yesterday's has been a Five Points landmark since its opening in 1976. The decor is pure Americana and the tavern serves everyone from college students to politicians to tourists. Delicious Southern fare is the main menu feature, like fried chicken and shrimp and grits. They also have a late night menu, open til 1 a.m.

Right outside downtown Columbia, next to the Riverbanks Zoo, the Embassy Suites offers big, clean rooms and delicious breakfasts every morning. There are plenty of nearby dining options and the daily manager's special offers free drinks and snacks. The business center offers computers and printing for those working travelers. The indoor pool allows visitors to take a dip, even when it's chilly outside.
Embrace your inner child at Frankie's Fun Park, which offers your favorite attractions from the state fair: bumper boats, race track, rock climbing wall, mini golf, laser tag, fun house, drop zone (pictured above), arcade and batting cages. Prices are a la carte, so you only have to pay for the rides you want to go on.
