One Day in Providence, Rhode Island

Although Providence is the capital city of Rhode Island, it's still a relatively small city. You can see quite a bit in just one day, if you don't have a whole weekend to explore. Take the Amtrak Acela from most of the Northeast, and start your adventure right in the center of the city. You'll see some beautiful architecture, get some shopping done, and eat delicious food, all in 24 hours.

If you do decide to extend your one-day stay to an overnight, the Westin in Providence is my favorite hotel in the city. With those amazing beds and it's proximity to the train station, downtown area, and mall, it's the perfect place.
Federal Hill in Providence is famous for its Italian food, and I recommend Cassarino's as your dinner destination. It's loud and casual, and the food is absolutely delicious. Parking is at a premium in all of Federal Hill, so you'll want to take a cab or use the valet parking service.

The RI State House, on the National Register of Historic Places, is absolutely beautiful, and a must-see if you are interested in architecture. Completed in 1900, it's the fourth largest self-supported marble dome in the world. The RI State House has also been featured in movies as the US Capitol.
Rhode Island underwent a "renaissance" in the 90s, which included re-routing the Providence River. The construction also created Waterplace Park, with shops, restaurants, and beautiful scenery. It's a great thing to check out.
If your travels take you to Providence in the winter months, check out the Bank of America City Center skating rink. It's larger than the Rockefeller Plaza skating rink. Don't worry about skates - you can rent them right at the rink.

The Providence Place Mall, located right near the Amtrak station and the State House (and attached to the Westin), offers upscale shopping, and two different movie theaters (a standard theater and an Imax theater). You can also grab lunch there - in one of the many restaurants or the food court. More
