Do It Like a Local: A Weekend Guide to Newport

I grew up in Rhode Island, and spent my summers working in Newport. As a local to the area, I still loved visiting the local tourist attractions, because they just never grow old. But, Newport is also a great place to just relax, soaking up the sun on the beautiful beaches and imagining the days gone by when those gorgeous mansions were mere "summer homes". I also love shopping in Newport, and dining at the wonderful waterside restaurants.

The Hotel Viking is located right in the middle of the action in Newport. Since you can just park your car and walk to many local attractions, it's incredibly convenient. The hotel started a huge renovation, and now has many modern amenities
This is my favorite spot in Newport, because it's casual and fun. They also have great drinks and a large menu. I'd highly recommend the lobster bisque which is one of my favorite dishes!

Fort Adams State Park is located right on the water, and is a wonderful way to enjoy the beautiful scenery in Newport. It's also a great place to explore the history of Newport. Guided tours are offered daily in the summer months.
Brick Market Place offers loads of shopping and restaurants - both small boutiques and larger chain stores. It's like a small village, and a great place to get some souvenirs.
Purgatory Chasm is one of those places that only locals know about. It's a beautiful site where erosion has let to an opening in the ground. When the waves hit, it's absolutely beautiful!
If you visit Newport, you absolutely have to spend at least part of a day on the gorgeous coastline, and this is a great spot for doing that.
