    You're going to have to head east or west from San Jose to get to any beaches. To the east is Costa Rica's Caribbean coast, which has warmer waters and a more tropical feel. The beaches of the west coast are great for surfing and have their own charms. I suggest taking a bus, whichever you decide. It's pretty cheap but takes a while, but at least you don't have to worry about doing the drive yourself. More
