Historic Weekend With Kids in Philadelphia

The City of Brotherly Love? I wouldn't go that far. The people of Philadelphia have worked hard to earn their reputation as "unfriendly", but that's no reason to avoid this Pennsylvania hamlet with the kids. Be prepared for lots of teaching moments about good manners and enjoy sharing a hands-on history lesson as a family. Your kids can learn more about the formation of our country in one weekend in Philadelphia than they may in an entire year of American History - or at least more that they'll retain. You might find yourself learning a few things the textbooks left out, too.

The Comfort Inn in Downtown Philadelphia is a great location for family's on a budget. You can walk to many local attractions or take advantage of the hotel's courtesy van. While this is not a fancy hotel and you should expect modest accommodations, you can request a room with a view of the river to liven things up. The rates here a... More >

The rates here are low enough you may even request two rooms to accommodate for kids and adults with varying bed times!
Although there's some debate among locals and tourists about where to get the best philly cheese-steak, there's one thing everyone can agree on: you can't leave Philadelphia without at least trying the local cuisine. One bite of roast beef and cheeze whiz on a hoagie bun and you can officially say you've been to Philly. Whether you have it with or without peppers or onions is up to you. Pat's King of Steaks is a favorite of many, although to really have an intelligent discussion you'll need to compare their sandwiches to Geno's also.
This is actually not a place to stock up on shoes or souvenirs, but a large courtyard outside Independence Hall - and the best place to start a tour of Philadelphia.
Much like the cheese-steak, the Liberty Bell is something you have to see when you're in Philadelphia. What you don't necessarily have to do is endure the extremely long line to do it. There's actually a window right outside where the Liberty Bell is kept that you can peek in and take pictures. If you have a history buff in the family this might not cut it, but if you have an impatient child in tow this is a genius and afternoon-saving idea. Chances are there will be plenty see on the active plaza just outside the building as well.
This is tiny museum provides an interesting look at some of the exceptional people who helped create our nation. The "free Quakers" were men and women who decided to breakaway from the "Society of Friends" in order to support the fight against the British in the Revolutionary War, something pacifist Quakers couldn't do. Betsy Ross was one of the last members of this congregation. A visit here is free and gives kids an opportunity to see what a Quaker house looked like and talk to a historian in period costume about the role of Quakers in the country's independence.
OK, fine, this isn't exactly historical in the conventional sense of the word. But if you lived through the 80s you have to a) show your kids the Rocky movies and then b) bring them to the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Pose in front of the Rocky statue and then run up the stairs. If you don't actually go into the museum, this is a great "last day before we head to the airport" activity. The museum itself is actually known for hosting some pretty fabulous exhibits, too.

If something catches your eye on the tour, you can always go back for a more in depth look afterward.
