One Day in Fargo

If youve seen Fargo, the movie, and like me, if youve never been there, youre probably assuming that this town is a tiny, backwater place with a few strange people, dive bars, a barren landscape, and bad weather. That's what I used to think. But now I'm here to say: dont believe it. Fargo is so much more than that. This forward-thinking, bike-friendly mid-sized community has it all; a thriving, revitalized downtown, lots of outdoorsy things to do, a fabulous economy and a community of folks that actually seem to like living there. Don't laugh the next time you think of Fargo: instead, take a drive up to North Dakota and experience the best of what this great town is all about.

One of Fargo's best assets is the colossal, lush and natural wooded setting that makes up Lindenwood Park. Situated along the banks of the Red River (which consistently floods each year), Lindenwood is where everyone goes to play and recreate. From the long, winding multi-use paths to the clean, wooded campground for tents and RVs, Lindenwood Park is a great place to get a feel for the fine people of Fargo. You can get lost here for days. And when you're ready to leave the park, the park's bike path will also will take you to just about anywhere in the older, more charming side of Fargo. Rent a bike at the park recreation headquarters, or bring your own, you'll have a blast riding through this beautiful, clean park that Fargoans are obvi... More >

Admission to the museum will set you back a whopping $5, but you'll have a great afternoon getting to know the most modern artists of the Plains, along with people watching the locals who come here for more than 12 different exhibitions a year, community workshops, lectures or just to hang out at the on-site cafe.
Formerly a permanent tenant apartment flophouse, this large building was saved from the wrecking ball back in 2001 and is now one of the most popular places to eat, sleep and drink in town.
When driving through the Dakotas, I saw lots of billboards that said "Eat Beef!" Perhaps they were talking about Doolittles. This carnivore-oriented woodfire grill is the finest place in town to consume massive quantities of beef, chicken or fish while celebrating that special occasion with friends and family.
When I (a lifelong vegetarian) arrived in North Dakota, a fellow vegetarian warned me that this part of the world is not a great place to live if you like vegetables. Perhaps they're right, but even if they are, the great community of like-minded, health-oriented folks who you'll meet at Tochi's will help you forget that. Tochi's is a ... More >

Perhaps they're right, but even if they are, the great community of like-minded, health-oriented folks who you'll meet at Tochi's will help you forget that. Tochi's is a legencary old school health food emporium that brings the best organic and healthy products to a part of the world that desperately needs it. Hang out for a bit and get to know the customers shopping there. You'll meet some nice people who will talk your ear off if you want, and maybe even invite you to church (it happened to me!). I love it here.

Downtown Fargo once suffered the depressing fate of many old dilapidated commercial districts, but today it's once again a thriving center of culture, nightlife and community. The Donaldson Hotel is a shining example of what redevelopment funds can do for a commercial district like Fargo's. Formerly a permanent tenant apartment flophouse, this large building was saved from the wrecking ball back in 2001 and is now one of the most popular places to eat, sleep and drink in town. The location is great, and near the best downtown attractions and nightlife that Fargo has to offer.
