Bismarck Weekend with Kids

North Dakota seems to be a hidden gem when it comes to vacation destinations, and its capitol city of Bismarck may be overlooked as a fun place to visit. My kids and I spent three days in Bismarck and wished we'd had more time. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Bismarck.

Although this sprawling hotel doesn't offer kitchenettes or free breakfasts, kids will love the poolside rooms and small waterpark. Parents will like that the pool area is small enough to easily supervise young children. With easy access to restaurants and stores, the Ramkota is a good choice for families.
This state park just south of Bismarck/Mandan offers two eras of history: the traditional earth lodges of the Hidatsa Indians, and the recreated Custer House and fort ruins that give insight into General Custer before his "last stand." Other recreational activities are also available in the park.
Get a free tour of this art deco skyscraper capitol, which includes the "monkeywood room" and specially designed privacy alcoves and ends at the observation deck, where you can get a good view of the city and surrounding area.
Dakota Zoo is pleasant to visit, an oasis in the middle of Bismarck. It has a wide variety of animals. Kids will enjoy the tram ride through the zoo and the playground.

This small science museum may not be the fanciest one around, but my kids loved it. We've been to a lot of science museums, and the hands-on exhibits here were unique and interesting.
Learn about North Dakota's history at the Heritage Center on the grounds of the State Capitol. Educational exhibits and hands-on stations for kids make the state's history interesting.
