Mount Gulian is the colonial homestead of the prominent Dutch Verplanck family, established around 1730. Used mainly as their summer retreat and a working plantation, Mount Gulian was turned over to the Continental Army during the War for Independence, because of its strategic riverside location across from Washingtons Headquarters at Newburgh. Programs at Mount Gulian cover a variety of topics, including the Wappinger Native Americans, a soldiers life during the Revolutionary War, and everyday colonial life.

New York State operates this 1,000-acre farm as an environmental education center, offering programs mainly for children. Budget cuts have recently affected the programming, but the grounds remain accessible, and include a groomed woodlands trail, a barn with several animals, and the Verplanck Manor House visitor center and library. Today, the Van Wyck Homestead is a Museum, but in 1776 it was the home of Isaac Van Wyck. It was requisitioned by the Continental Army for use as an officers' headquarters and a major military supply depot. Tours are available on weekends, and special events are held throughout the year.
