Kansas City on a Budget

Not as well known as a destination as St. Louis, Kansas City is actually larger and more lively. There is a lot to see here for a family on a budget. It's the "city of fountains" with hundreds within its limits. We were only able to see a couple of them, though. Come for sports, barbecue, jazz, and museums.

A budget priced hotel fairly close to the city center. Just head north on Main Street to get to downtown. Clean, comfortable rooms with kitchens, utensils, and fitness facility. WiFi costs $4.95 per stay. You'll give up daily maid service (once a week) but you'll save on the room rate, starting at $75.
Interesting museum dedicated to African American baseball player from the first half of the twentieth century, a time when many were banned from major league baseball. Great players with fascinating stories. Adults $8, kids $3.

Adjacent to the Negro Leagues museum is the American Jazz Museum, located in the historically Black neighborhood of 18th and Vine. A foodie's paradise with produce stalls, restaurants, and snack bars surrounding a large plaza. On Saturdays, a farmer's market fills up the middle. Have some grilled meat at Carollo's Deli (pictured) and dessert at Bloom's next door. Easily reached via the MAX bus. Free.
