One Day in Independence, Missouri

You can't ignore history in this town near Kansas City. Our 33rd president lived here and the Mormon Church has some of its most sacred ground here. Take a day to soak it in, have some great local barbecue, and then shop in one of the country's largest sporting goods stores.

Across from the spiraled temple of the rival Community of Christ temple, the LDS Visitor's Center is located next to where church founder Joseph Smith prophesized that the church's members would be raised to heaven. That spot, an empty lot since 1831, is still there among the various church buildings, temples, and museums. A different site to see but worth it for the stunning temple design across the street. Free.
See his courtroom and office here in the main square, across from the ice cream shop that a younger Harry had his first job at.

Truman Courtroom & Office
Before he was a president or senator, Harry S. Truman was a judge. See his courtroom and office here in the main square, across from the ice cream shop that a younger Harry had his first job at. $2 for adults, a dollar for kids.
