New Ulm, MN, Weekend with Kids

Just a short drive from Minneapolis/St. Paul, the German-styled town of New Ulm has a lot to offer for families looking for a weekend getaway. In addition to historical attractions, the city's parks are well-kept and the bike trail is a unique way to see the city. Because many of the attractions listed here are open seasonally, a summer trip is recommended.

In the German-heritage town of New Ulm, stay at the Holiday Inn where you can enjoy German fare (or Green Mill pizza) in the hotel's restaurant, relax by the pool, or head out to one of the attractions in town.
Perhaps the most-recognized place in New Ulm, Hermann Monument sits high atop the Minnesota River Valley bluff. For a small admission fee in the warmer months, kids will love scrambling to the top for a great view of New Ulm.
A brewery tour might not seem like a kid-friendly attraction, but at the end of the Schell's tour there's 1919 Root Beer for the kids, which is enough to keep my kids coming back.

Home of children's author/illustrator/artist Wanda Gag, kids will enjoy seeing the nooks and crannies where she grew up as well as admiring the Millions of Cats Christmas tree. Home of children's author/illustrator/artist Wanda Gag, kids will enjoy seeing the nooks and crannies where she grew up as well as admiring the Millions of Cats Christmas tree. Open in the summer, for Wanda Gag's birthday party in March, and by appointment.

If you don't have time for a tour, walk through the (free) gardens and see if you can spot the peacocks or deer that live on the property.

Take a few minutes to stop in this small museum that showcases famous Minnesota musicians. While old-time music has its place here, all types of music are represented. Bob Dylan, anyone? If you're lucky, you might get your own private concertina concert. Located in the lower level of the public library building. More
