THINGS TO DO

  1. Lutsen Mountains Ski Area
"I've skied every state in the West except Hawaii, as well as Canada and much of the Midwest and East. Lutsen is special. The scenery is spectacular. Moose Mountain, Mystery Mountain, Eagle Mountain -- western skiers wouldn't call them mountains, but they are magnificent nonetheless. And to stand at the top of Bridge Run, or look to the east from the chalet atop Moose Mountain, and see the ski runs below you, then the trees and streams leading down to the shore, and then the vast blue expanse of Lake Superior stretching out to the skylilne -- it is breathtaking, unforgettable, and one-of-a-kind. Lutsen's size and variety, vertical drop and length of runs, although not equal to the Rockies, exceed anything in the Midwest and rival most of the East. Some black diamond runs probably should be classed as blue runs, but some definitely deserve single-diamond and even double-diamond status, and there are plenty of long blue and green runs as well. Lutsen's snow-making equipment helps extend the season, and although Minnesota doesn't get the powder of the West, the slopes are well-groomed. And even though our last visit to Lutsen was on a weekend, the slopes were not crowded and we never had to wait in a lift line. I've lost count of the times I've skied Lutsen these past 40 years, but even though I live thousands of miles away, Lutsen always seems like home. I'll be back! John Eidsmoe" - a Tripadvisor user
