A Local's Weekend Guide To Martha's Vineyard

As a college student, I spent summers in Martha's Vineyard working, playing and exploring. A short ferry ride from the Cape, Martha's Vineyard became a national attraction because of Presidential vacations. But there are lots of special spots that aren't overrun with tourists. You just need to know where to look.

Blending in behind the beautiful homes just on the edge of town in Edgartown is the Shiretown Inn. It boasts a variety of options from carriage houses to B&B styled rooms. The restaurant on-site provides an intimate dining environment after a sunset stroll to the lighthouse.
Take the On Time Ferry from Edgartown over to Chappaquiddick where the beaches are peaceful with mostly locals. The water is a bit stronger out here, but it always feels warmer to me. Chappy is a happy place.
The shortest ferry ride ever brings you to Chappy where the Mytoi Japanese Gardens are beautiful.
I enjoy a walk out to the lighthouse after a visit across the way to Chappaquiddick. The shortest ferry ride ever brings you to Chappy where the Mytoi Japanese Gardens are beautiful. The lighthouse awaits your return like an old friend.

Even the locals enjoy the carousel. The nation's oldest platform carousel, how can you not get nostalgic taking a spin and trying to grab the brass ring? And when you exit, you can stroll through Oak Bluffs and be dazzled by the gingerbread houses distracting you from all the tourist shops.
I love nothing more than sunset watching. The village of Menemsha in Chilmark is where you need to be. Dramatic views of the sun swallowed up by the ocean. And The Bite clam shack is happy to provide you with your romantic picnic to-go for the show.
