Do It Like a Local - A Weekend Guide to Fall River, MA

Having been born in Fall River, MA, I was unaware of its local charm and character until I moved away. Known primarily as an old textile mill city, Fall River is located on the Taunton River about an hour south of Boston. It's just a short drive to Providence and Newport, RI, as well as Cape Cod, MA.

Fall River is known for it's seafood and Portuguese dishes. LePage's Seafood offers the traditional seafood fare, as well as some with a Portuguese twist - like Shrimp Mozambique. Locals love it, and it's been around since I was a kid!
World War II battleship the USS Massachusetts (one of only 8 remaining WWII battleships) is on permanent display at Battleship Cove, on the Taunton River. There are several other vessels to tour as well. Most locals have been here on at least one occasion (or field trip!) because it's a great way to see a real piece of history.

The Marine Museum is located across from the USS Massachusetts in the same area as Battleship Cove. The museum offers one of the largest exhibits of Titanic memorabilia, along with a new exhibit from the Andrea Doria. It's another great way to learn more about our nation's maritime history.
St. Anne's Shrine is located right in the center of Fall River and is truly beautiful. It's peaceful and calming - a great place to meditate. I always come here to light a candle when I feel that I need a little extra prayer.
Heritage State Park is an 8.5 state park located right near Battleship Cove. I'd recommend that you make a day of touring the battleship, the museum, and then relax by the water at the park. It also offers a historic carousel - original from nearby Lincoln Park and moved to Heritage Park in the 90s.
