Cambridge: Do it Like a Local

A sense of community fills the air in Cambridge - and it's contagious. "Cambridge Local First" stickers, which represent businesses committed to building a strong local economy and community, dot the many independent shops, inviting you to come in and try what makes the city special. Cambridge is known for its "squares" or neighborhoods, like Harvard, Inman, Porter and Central. Each one is walkable, or easily accessible by T, and boasts its own unique flavor. The streets are always filled with people, whether it's a beautiful Spring day or the middle of Winter. In Cambridge, no matter where you are, you are never alone.

Hilarity ensues when you walk through the doors of ImprovBoston, conveniently located around the corner from the Central Square T stop. Whether you're watching improv, sketch or standup, there is a sense of camaraderie among the local comedians that makes you proud to support them from your seat. Tickets are reasonably priced and you can grab a snack or drink at the bar while mingling with the performers. My favorite show is "Friday Night Face-off" and Thursday's "Harold Night," but you're bound to laugh until it hurts almost any night of the week.
You can't walk past this boutique without wanting to go inside, and I suggest you don't fight that urge. Boutique Fabulous carries items from local designers - some of them modern, some of them vintage, all of them fabulous. Boutique Fabulous carries items from local designers - some of them modern, some of them vintage, all of them fabulous. When I peruse the jewelry, kitchenware, clothing, luggage and more, I tend to forget that I'm in a store and feel like I'm in a museum. The staff is incredibly helpful and friendly and it's the perfect place to grab that one of a kind souvenir or gift.
The Middle East is located in Central Square and if you haven't already guessed, they serve delicious Middle Eastern food that is reasonably priced (try the hummus).
The best sandwich I've ever had is from City Girl Cafe in Inman Square. The ingredients are undoubtedly fresh, the bread always tastes like it just came out of the oven and they offer an eccentric collection of wine and beer. City Girl Cafe is open for brunch, lunch and dinner and if you're with a friend, I recommend sharing so you can experience as much of the menu as you can.
Dont take my word for it, ask Julia Child! Julia was a regular at Savenor's Market and she helped put it on the map when she invited owner, Jack Savenor, on her show. Dont take my word for it, ask Julia Child! Julia was a regular at Savenor's Market and she helped put it on the map when she invited owner, Jack Savenor, on her show. Beyond the celebrity tie, Savenor's is a lovely destination for anyone wanting to experience Cambridge's local scene. Their quality meats, specialty foods and produce are beautifully displayed and delicious. Whether you want to pop in for a healthy snack to recharge or are staying with friends and want to thank them for their hospitality with a home cooked meal, Savenor's Market has some of the freshest options around.

The Middle East is located in Central Square and if you haven't already guessed, they serve delicious Middle Eastern food that is reasonably priced (try the hummus). They also have a complete vegetarian menu. At night you'll find a glob of people in and outside of the restaurant either waiting for a table or, more often than not, waiting to see a band. If you want to mix and mingle with the locals, The Middle East is the place to go.
Beyond the celebrity tie, Savenor's is a lovely destination for anyone wanting to experience Cambridge's local scene.
One of the best things about Cambridge is the perfect view of Boston's skyline across the Charles River, and the Hyatt Regency offers a front row seat. You'll pay premium prices per night for a room with a balcony terrace that overlooks the city (which is worth it if you're willing to splurge), but you can also find more affordable rooms for under $200 that offer all the amenities you could ask for.
