What to See in Boston When You Only Have One Day

There are a large variety of attractions to see in Boston, but that shouldn't discourage you if you only have a short time to spend here. You can get a great taste of what this city is all about in just one day. Here are the spots I've brought visitors to for an overview of my favorite city.

You might not be able to get a ticket to the game, but you can take a tour of baseball's oldest ballpark. There have been lots of renovations since Babe Ruth and Ted Williams played, but I still get chills looking out at the same field where they played. Tours give you access to that field and unique views of the Back Bay. Or you can skip the tour and have a meal at the Bleacher Bar for an inside look at the park from underneath the bleacher stands. Fenway and the Sox are the heart of Boston so to understand the city, you need to experience its true love.
You can follow the red/brick line through the cobbled streets by foot for free, or you can hop on and off the Old Town Trolley Tour for a fee. Either way will lead you through Boston's major historic sites, giving you an opportunity to pick and choose where to spend more time. The trolley will get you to them more quickly and provide insight along the way. I have done both ways and prefer to walk at my leisure, getting a real feel for the modern city surrounding the roots of our country.

While you are in Boston you want to sample some seafood. As far as I am concerned, the best place to do this is on the water, family style. There are plenty of stuffy establishments with overpriced menus in town, but the Barking Crab is all atmosphere. Perched over the harbor with picnic table seating, festive lights and overflowing baskets & buckets of fresh seafood it is my favorite spot for friendly food and fun. Plu... More

Plus they serve good burgers and beers to boot.

In addition to being the picturesque home to Paul Revere's House and the beautiful Old North Church, it is a vibrant cobblestoned cluster of some of the best Italian restaurants, salumerias and pastry shops anywhere in the Northeast. Monica's is a personal favorite, tucked off of Hanover Street, but you really are hard pressed to find a bad meal here.
