Wells Weekend on A Budget

Between the presidential mansion at Kennebunkport and the lobster boats of Oqunquit lies the pretty and quiet town of Wells, Maine. This is our base of operations when we're in the area. Easy to get to, easy to get around. A perfect place for a great family weekend.

Giant suites, fairly luxurious accommodations, and great prices with nothing between you and the ocean except the estuary. Upgraded rooms include washer and dryer, large living rooms, and kitchens. In the peak of fall color, you'll pay less that $150 for a two bedroom flat.
Can't go to Maine without stopping by one of the many little snack shops selling chowder and lobster rolls. It might as well be Mike's, here in Wells where you can get great examples of both. Around $10 per person.

The kind of place you didn't think existed anymore. If you're here in the summer with kids, visit this beachside amusement mecca with rides, arcades, and...yes...the occasional shady character. Free, rides start at $2.50.
If you're here when the weather is right, some time at the beach is in order. Lay in the sun, get the know the locals...they'll want to get to know you...but beware, the water will be chilly even at the peak of summer heat. Free.
Take a little drive up to former President Bush's home of Kennebunkport and get some cheap lobster and chowder at this funky red shack perched on the bridge over the Kennebunk River. Around $10 per person.

Walk off your lobster past the tacky souvenir shops, and around the corner you'll find this great little ice cream stand. Buy a cone or a bowl and find a place to sit, watching the ducks swim around the lobster boats in the river. Less than $5 per person. More
