Our Take on Calais, Maine

Calais, Maine is just about as close to Canada as you can get. Sitting right on the Canadian border, it overlooks the fabulous St. Croix River. Tourism is high on the list, as you visit this eighth busiest border crossing into Canada. It’s just across from St. Stephen, New Brunswick, Canada.

The Moosehorn National Wildlife Refuge is the place to find out about the flora and fauna of the region, and outdoor activities abound, from boating to biking to hiking. Don’t let the term, Devil’s Head, scare you or your kids! It’s a huge 340-foot piece of granite jutting out along the boulder strewn river beach. It is a magnificent site to behold.

The kid friendly Downeast Heritage Museum is open every day, from Memorial Day through Columbus Day. If you’ve ever wondered what Maine is all about, this place is for you. The museum is the starting point for the East Coast Greenway, a biking and hiking trail that will eventually reach all the way to Key West, Florida.

For romantic getaways in this French-influenced town, try one of many Calais accommodations, including the Greystone Bed & Breakfast, where fine linens and a scrumptious breakfast receive raves in travel guides.
