Guttenberg Vacations, Tourism & Travel Information

Our Take on Guttenberg, Iowa

Gutenberg, Iowa was named for Johannes Gutenberg, the inventor of moveable type. It is a small, historic town of about 2,000 people. Gutenberg has some interesting things to see and do and it’s a nice choice for quiet family vacations and romantic getaways. Attractive old German buildings are all over the town and they provide some insight into the town’s past.

For family vacations, Gutenberg has two main attractions to offer. Gutenberg’s kid friendly aquarium is a great place to visit on your family vacation. Kids can have fun looking at turtles and trout, and the aquarium is located in a 1930s hatchery, making it interesting for adults as well – and best of all, it’s free!  Another good option for a family vacation is a visit to the Lockmaster’s House Heritage Museum, free as well. There are several hotels and motels families can choose from in Gutenberg. The Gutenberg River Inn and Café is a great choice for families because it has two large suites and a children’s menu.

For a romantic getaway, Gutenberg’s mile-long River Walk area is a peaceful place to stroll. There are also several quaint eateries and restaurants to explore, and Ingleside Park is a lovely place to have a private picnic.
