When your city is home to the Simon Malls headquarters (you know, the kingpin of all things shopping across the United States), it stands to reason the bargain hunting would be pretty extensive in its backyard. Greenwood Park Mall, once the largest enclosed mall in Indiana until Castleton (another Simon holding, of course) expanded, still ranks as the easiest to navigate. It also provides an excellent retail magnet for other shopping, dining and pampering experiences -- an activity residents and guests alike agree make this Indianapolis suburb shine. the minute they drift south of County Line Road.

Park on the Von Maur side (south, facing Fry Road) for the best spaces -- the roundabout on the US 31 side confuses many shoppers, who manage to muck up the traffic flow and make travel in that section annoying. This strategy also means your first introduction to the mall is an elegant department store setting, complete with live piano music as you shop. Among the more unusual retailers in this mall: National Art Gallery, Go Fish Clothing, UniversiTees, Body Flash and Hollywood Shoppe. My favorite? Lady Footlocker.

Greenwood offers several excellent restaurants that are one-of-a-kind in our city, including Smokey Bones, Johnny Carino's, and Cheeseburger in Paradise. But my husband and I lobbied hard and long to get On the Border in our neck of the woods. I can't honestly say our begging made one lick of difference with the headquarters, but I have stuck to my promise of eating there several times a month now that they are open. There'... More

But my husband and I lobbied hard and long to get On the Border in our neck of the woods. I can't honestly say our begging made one lick of difference with the headquarters, but I have stuck to my promise of eating there several times a month now that they are open. There's just no better way to end your day than with tableside guacamole, fajitas and a margarita with salt on the rim.
