Do It Like a Local in Greenwood

When it comes to suburbs, Greenwood, Indiana, offers more than your usual shopping and dining options. From Old Street Greenwood to a picnic in Craig Park to an award-winning show choir performance at Center Grove High School or a round of golf at Valle Vista, this is a town with a strong sense of hospitality. Its residents are upper middle class incomes, but they don't put on airs, just their best manners. Oh, and the shopping and dining? It's to die-for, with many retailers located here that you can't find elsewhere around the Indianapolis area. Here's how to make the most of your day here.

The mall was an outdoor venue until the mid 1970s -- in 2007, Simon Malls went back to its roots and added an outdoor wing to this family entertainment spot. Locals scoffed when they first announced the plans -- who would shop outdoors in January, February and March? -- but soon changed their tune when The Cheesecake Factory and Coldwater Creek were among the chains to grab a spot.

Sure, folks use this setting for bridal parties and class reunions. They're missing the best part of Valle Vista Country Club's amenities -- the golf! This fairway is a bit wider than other courses in the area, providing a not-so-subtle challenge to your swing.

The playground features equipment for kids with disabilities (think swings for those in wheelchairs) as well as the usual slides and monkey bars., The designers even threw in some toddler-sized options for younger siblings who want to play along without sustaining a concussion. The most popular place in town to watch the midnight premiere of the blockbuster releases. Greenwood residents are always up for some good, clean fun, which means standing in lines wrapped around the building for hour is part of the celebration. We're not afraid to dress in character and party with our closest friends.

Locals don't need lodging, of course -- they sleep comfortably in their own beds. That's precisely the atmosphere the owners at Persommon Tree Bed and Breakfast try to recreate for its Greenwood guests, and the Madison Ave. location puts you close to the retail action but not close enough to hear the bustle. It's a great way to go back to grandma's house, where playing was the sole focus of your day.  More
