Naperville Weekend With Kids

Kid-friendly Naperville, Illinois makes regular appearances on lists like "Best Place to Raise a Family" and "Best Cities For Kids" for good reason. It is home to the DuPage Children's Museum, the Riverwalk, a skateboard park, and many other park district facilities, which are scattered all over town. Locals and tourists alike enjoy a wide variety of family fun all year round.

You can't miss The DuPage Children's Museum: its brightly colored, whimsical exterior (on the corner of Washington and Spring) beckons families to come and enjoy some hands-on exploration of all kinds of concepts, using a wide variety of materials. You can't miss The DuPage Children's Museum: its brightly colored, whimsical exterior (on the corner of Washington and Spring) beckons families to come and enjoy some hands-on exploration of all kinds of concepts, using a wide variety of materials. Though the exhibits in the museum are geared towards children aged ten and younger, I'm pretty certain you can see kids of ALL ages messing around if you look around. Popular parts of the museum are WaterWays (where you can--after putting on an apron--splash around and play with different objects) and Bubbles (where you can learn and play with those slippery, soapy shapes!), but you're just getting started with those two! It is a joyful thing, to watch children learn through play, and DCM certainly provides countless opportunities for that--and the photo ops to match!
The "crown jewel" of Naperville, the Riverwalk has something for everyone in a gorgeous setting. The west end of the DuPage River runs right through the downtown area, and you can utilize brick and paved paths to saunter through the beautiful landscaping, enjoying views of the famous bridges, fountains, sculptures, parks, and much more along the way. Walking along the river, you'll see Rotary Hill, the Millennium Carillon, Centennial Beach, the paddle boats, and countless other charming features that will make you either extremely happy and proud to live in Naperville, or--if you don't live here--consider for a moment what you'd need to do in order to become a resident. The Naperville Riverwalk is one of my favorite places to take pictures of my two sons: we have photos of them next to the bridges from the last eighteen years, and I treasure them immensely! (As you can imagine, we're not the only family to use the Naperville Riverwalk as a photo setting: you'll see others EVERYWHERE!)
For the older kids, laser tag and paintball will keep them busy physically AND mentally.

Conveniently located off I-88 at Naperville Road, the Holiday Inn Select is also just a short drive from downtown Naperville as well as lots of restaurants and a 30-screen movie theater. There is a pool here, and kids eat free, so you might have a hard time getting them OUT of the hotel, but at least you know that when you do, you're pretty close to everything else!

For the older kids, laser tag and paintball will keep them busy physically AND mentally. When they're dog-tired? Pizza and other kid-friendly fare is available for munching during a much-needed break. Naturally the video game arcade is a huge draw, and players can collect tickets with which they can take home prizes they choose themselves. Local tip: though most guests get to Odyssey Fun World in a car, it's also just off the Wheaton Branch of the Prairie (Bike) Path!
Naturally the ice cream is a huge draw for Colonial Cafe, but in fact this Naperville tradition is a full-service restaurant with great food and reasonable prices. The Kids' Menu is very, very extensive (Kids eat free every Monday night, too!), and the adult menu isn't too shabby, either. You can satisfy just about every craving here, three meals a day plus dessert. Speaking of dessert, that particular menu includes everything PLUS the Kitchen Sink, which is a super-sized sundae that comes with a bumper sticker to show off your pride when you eat the entire thing.

I am happily married with two teenaged boys and a beagle. I am a group fitness instructor and work part time as a Salon Coordinator, but writing is my real passion. I am a freelance magazine writer and the author of "Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet." I am currently working on my second book, which is a Chicago area family travel guide. The best way to keep up with my family's goings-on is to read my blog (that's how *I* keep up with my family's goings-on!) at http://thesuburbanscrawl.blogspot.com. I write about our family, working out, the dog, and anything else that comes to mind. It's quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Stop by and say hello!
