Chicago Weekend On A Budget

Believe it or not, you can spend a weekend in a big city--Chicago, to name the one that's most pertinent in this case--on a little budget. Whether you're married, single, young, or old, there is cheap (and free) fun to be had in the Windy City!

Full of beautiful sculptures and fountains and home to features like the BP Bridge and the Jay Pritzker Pavillon, the Park has become a huge source of city pride. Prior to your visit, check out the official website at www.millenniumpark.org and download the free audio tour, which can be played on your MP3 player as you walk through the Park!
There are several locations of the Billy Goat in the city, but I recommend the one at 430 N. Michigan, on the lower level (take the stairs down; they're located right in front of Walgreens near the Wrigley Building). The Billy Goat Tavern has a rich Chicago history, but Saturday Night Live fans the world over know it as the inspiration for John Belushi's sketch that is famous for "Cheezborger, Cheezborger..." and "No fries...cheeps! By the way, order a Doublecheezborger. It's better.

Check the hotel website directly for your travel dates; you can often find rates that are $100 less per night than you would expect.

Though the Chicago Cultural Center is the homebase of the Chicago Tourism Office, it's worth checking out in its own right. Not only was the building originally the home of the Chicago Public Library, but the world's largest Tiffany (glass) dome is also located here. The building has a rich history which you can learn about on a free tour on Wednesdays, Fridays, and Saturdays at 1:15 p.m. (Call before you go to check this!) If you're more interested in what's outside the building, the nice folks can help you with that, too: they've got scads of tourism brochures free for the taking, and can even set you up on a neighborhood tour by bus, or a Chicago Greeter tour, on foot with a local!

I am happily married with two teenaged boys and a beagle. I am a group fitness instructor and work part time as a Salon Coordinator, but writing is my real passion. I am a freelance magazine writer and the author of "Remembering Ruby: For Families Living Beyond the Loss of a Pet." I am currently working on my second book, which is a Chicago area family travel guide. The best way to keep up with my family's goings-on is to read my blog (that's how *I* keep up with my family's goings-on!) at http://thesuburbanscrawl.blogspot.com. I write about our family, working out, the dog, and anything else that comes to mind. It's quite entertaining, if I do say so myself. Stop by and say hello!
