Hollywood Splurge!

Hollywood, Florida, may not be a household name like Orlando, Ft. Myers or its famous neighbors to the north (Ft. Lauderdale) and south (Miami). It's not known for attracting the filthy rich like Palm Beach, Boca Raton or Naples. But if you're looking for some upper class fun at a budget price point you can afford, Hollywood can deliver. Residents know what a gem they have in this oceanside destination here's how you can make the most of it day and night.

Historically, Hollywood is about independent motels along the beach ... or was until Westin broke out the construction cranes to locate a 5-star property as a statement on the city's southernmost limits. The Diplomat has quickly become a haven for conferences, shopping, night clubs and cruising entertainment in addition to hotel accommodations.
The Diplomat wins my vote as your hotel of choice because you can't beat that stunning view of the ocean surrounding every view from the balconies. But there's nothing stopping you from an evening of fun at Hard Rock's casino tables, whether you choose the slots or a game of poker, blackjack, roulette, or craps. Hard Rock Hotel is actu... More >
The Diplomat wins my vote as your hotel of choice because you can't beat that stunning view of the ocean surrounding every view from the balconies. But there's nothing stopping you from an evening of fun at Hard Rock's casino tables, whether you choose the slots or a game of poker, blackjack, roulette, or craps. Hard Rock Hotel is actually an entire entertainment complex, complete with boutiques and upscale restaurants to fill your evening.
The Diplomat has quickly become a haven for conferences, shopping, night clubs and cruising entertainment in addition to hotel accommodations.

Who let the dogs out? Hollywood Greyhound Track does, five days a week. Of course, if this style of entertainment abuses your sensibilities, the complex competes with Hard Rock for casino games, steakhouses, and live shows. You can even use this opportunity to talk to the owners about greyhound adoption -- they work closely with the Friends of Greyhounds, Inc. to find loving homes for their canines. An impressive 97 percent go to family homes when their racing days are finished.

When you choose a massage or facial pampering at Comfort Zone Studio, well, you're right on Harrison St., surrounded by the most delicious boutique shopping. And you simply couldn't pass up strolling in a few ... or buying that exquisite purse or dress or necklace after melting your troubles away at the serenity spa, could you? It's a match made in heaven.

Management locate its amenities in the middle of the 110-acre course, so you don't have to worry about competing with the general public for attention. Nor do you have to worry about slicing your ball into someone's front window -- this course isn't part of a residential complex.
If you want to take it farther than just dinner, ask about Captain Billy's Crack n Crab fishing cruises, where a party of 6 can sail out to catch your own crabs for dinner.
Zagat rated, award-winning Billy's Stone Crab doesn't look like much from the exterior concrete walls. But once you step inside, the waterside dining options (we like to sit on the swinging benches) and fresh seafood market convince even the skeptical that you've made the right move.
