Our Take on La Veta, Colorado
La Veta, Colorado, meaning "the vein," is located in the beautiful Cuchara valley. Situated between the Spanish Peaks, this was once the site of a fort to supply the Denver mining camps. Abandoned mines have also been found here, but no mining tour are currently available. At 7,000 feet elevation, and a population of under 1,000, this is a friendly and artistic community. It is fast becoming known as an artist's colony, and you will find many galleries here.
Visit Francisco Plaza, site of the historic fort, and learn about the town's history. Stop in at the Mountain Valley Quilt shop for a great souvenir, or visit the many shops on the Boardwalk. We recommend an excursion train ride to the nearby Great Sand Dunes National Park. Price of the ticket includes admission fee and motorcoach ride to the dunes, and you will have at least 2 hours in which to explore. There are many wide open spaces here in La Veta. Cattle ranching is still a common industry, and golfing has also become a major draw to the area. Town lakes teem with fish. Nature blossoms here in more than 300 days of sun, so there are enjoyable things to do all year round.
