Gunnison Vacations, Tourism & Travel Information
Our Take on Gunnison, Colorado
Gunnison, Colorado is a ranching and silver community of about 6,000, at the base of the Rockies. Its location makes it the coldest place in winter, with average sub-zero temperatures, but also a playground for skiers and snowmobilers alike. Popular winter activities also include ice hockey, and ice fishing. Despite the cold, winter tourism is high. The town finds many great ways to get the community together, such as the Sugar Plum Festival and the Night of Lights.
The mountain environment, and more than 300 days of sunshine per year, gives Gunnison high ratings for outdoor recreation. This friendly area boasts the best fly fishing and game hunting around. Families can participate in guided horseback or hiking adventures. Cycling, whitewater rafting, and kayaking are also a major draw here. To experience the beauty of life in the Crested Butte, look for Gunnison accommodations at one of the resorts or ranches, or try renting a cabin in the National Forest. Almost all outdoor activities are kid and pet friendly. For families with younger children, we recommend a scenic river tour, or a visit to Round Mountain Organics and Institute for a hands-on experience for the whole family. If you love the outdoors, this is the place for you.
