Edwin Carter, an ambitious man from upstate New York, was one of the hopefuls. Carter made his fortune, but discovered that fortune had a price. The chemicals used in mining were causing disturbing mutations in the local animals. Fearing that mining would destroy all of the local wildlife, he stopped mining and took up taxidermy, so he could show future generations the animals that once roamed our lands. The Edwin carter interactive museum has some of his specimens, as well as mining-oriented exhibits.
