Weekend Getaway in Truckee with the Kids

Truckee is a quaint, historical town right off Highway 80, about thirty miles outside Reno. Whether you're visiting for the day or staying for a week, there is plenty to do in and around Truckee. This area is an outdoor-lovers paradise. It is close to several world-class ski resorts, and there are innumerable trails to hike, paths to bike, rocks to climb, and lakes in which to swim and boat in the summer. In addition, there are many great restaurants in Truckee, and casinos just across the state line, in Nevada.

Pianeta Ristorante is located right on the main strip in historic downtown Truckee. The food is delicious and the service is excellent. The atmosphere is a little more upscale than most venues in Truckee. Get a table upstairs if you can.
The staff here pride themselves on being friendly and helpful.
An excellent place to have breakfast, the Squeeze In is also located right in historic downtown Truckee. It is so popular with locals and tourists alike, that there is usually a line out the door on weekends. Put your name in, and then wander the neighboring shops while you wait. Great omelets and fresh-squeezed orange juice.
I always try to have dinner at El Toro Bravo when I'm in Truckee. The food is tasty, authentic and plentiful, and the margaritas are cold, frothy and delicious! Northstar specializes in families. The staff here pride themselves on being friendly and helpful. The village has been completely redone in recent years. There is an ice-skating rink, and a variety of shops, galleries and restaurants. There is plenty of easy terrain for younger skiers-- my kids love riding up in the gondola and cruising back down-- and ample challenging runs for more advanced skiers and boarders.

My parents were in Squaw Valley for the 1960 Olympics. I've been going there all my life. One reason Squaw Valley appeals to families, is that the children's lift tickets are reasonably-priced. When I was a kid, children's lift tickets were free! Now they are $12 for kids 12 and under-- still a great deal. Another reason that Squaw is popular for skiers and snowboarders is that it has the most varied terrain around Tahoe: bunny hills for the beginners, plenty of intermediate blue runs, gigantic mogals, terrain parks for boarders, and even cliff-jumping for the crazies.
