Truckee Weekend with Kids

No matter the season, Truckee is the perfect playground for the outdoorsy family: ski, snowshoe, or snowmobile in the winter, hike and bike in the summer, wildflower and bird watch in the spring and fall. We love the casual atmosphere of the town, the historical charm, and the always top-of-the-line sports shops!

Northstar-at-Tahoe
You can find cute B&Bs in town, but if you want to be right in the ski and mountain biking action, we recommend staying at Northstar. Rent a condo for more room for your family (access to a kitchen always cuts down on expenses) and be in walking distance of all things outdoor.

Full Belly Deli
A local favorite in town, everyone's happy at this yummy deli. Think gourmet salads, wraps, sandwiches, and desserts! A bit hard to find, but worth the search!
In winter, enjoy their ice skating rink, tubing park and shops, and in summer, ride the gondola to the top to swim in the incredible mountain-top pool!

Donner Lake Kitchen
The short trip to Donner Lake is worth the drive, and the kids will enjoy exploring the lake front (and you'll enjoy the view) before heading into Donner Lake Kitchen for excellent food. Rounds out a great day of hiking or biking (but we're always too tired to make the trek after a day of skiing in winter!)

Donner Memorial State Park
Stand in the very spot the Donner Party struggled for survival so many years ago (and stare up at the huge measuring stick marking the snow level!). The park rangers at this memorial are excellent, as are the tactful exhibits. A great place to gain some appreciation for the wilderness around you! Free.

Donner Lake Rim Trail Out-and-Back
This yet-to-be-finished trail around the lake will eventually be over 20 miles long, so it's definitely an out-and-back trek. Go as far as you feel like, spotting wildflowers and enjoying the views. Free!

Squaw Valley
