A Local's Recommendations for Sunnyvale

In neighboring cities, Sunnyvale is best known for the plethora of strip malls that line El Camino, but it has so much more to offer! There are a tiny historic shopping district, lots of parks, and some interesting nightlife. For travelers from farther afield, one of the most appealing aspects of Sunnyvale is its convenience to the rest of the Bay Area; a train from the downtown station whisks passengers up to San Francisco in a single hour.

Sunnyvale's so-called Historic District is really more of a Historic Block, but it features more than its share of interesting boutiques, a wonderful used bookstore, and several excellent eateries. On Saturday mornings, there's a popular farmers' market on Murphy Avenue.
The Quarter Note is hands-down the best place for live music in Sunnyvale. Friday and Saturday nights are reserved for better-known local acts, but there's live entertainment of some kind every night of the week.
I've found the service at the Ginger Cafe a little hit or miss, but the food is delicious and reasonably priced!
Its excellent reputation keeps Mediterranean mishmash Dish Dash hopping until long after other restaurants downtown have closed. The decor and atmosphere are cozy, and the food is first rate.

This section of El Camino is lined with any number of hotels and motels. The Maple Tree Inn is one of the more popular among travelers, and is within walking distance of shops, grocery stores, and even the historic downtown area if you're up for a bit of a trek.
