Whether you walk it, drive it, or stay in it, Old Town Eureka is a stunning piece of living history. One of few main commercial districts on the West Coast that's never suffered major earthquake or fire damage, it's replete with Victorian houses, 19th-century storefronts, and neo-Renaissance architecture. Many of these buildings are occupied today by cute little cafes, shops, and B&Bs.
The Lost Coast Brewery and Cafe is a favorite local watering hole. With ten brews on tap, any beer lover will be in heaven here. Both the beer and the extensive food menu are reasonably priced, but if you can catch Happy Hour (from 4 to 6 PM on weekdays), a pint's a real bargain.
Unusual, eclectic, and delicious, Hurricane Kate's features a regularly changing menu of dishes than incorporate elements of cuisines from around the world.
Sequoia Park is the oldest zoo in California! Perhaps unsurprisingly, it's pretty diminuitive, but still finds room for dozens of species. Children will love the free-flight aviary and the farm animal petting zoo.
Simultaneously imposing and inviting, the beautifully restored Eagle House Victorian Inn is a great place to stay on any vacation to Eureka. Inside, antique furnishings contribute to the building's aura of authenticity, while an on-site theater/ballroom and restaurant put entertainment and food at guests' fingertips.
